Findhorn Ecovillage
It all started over forty years ago with a few people living in a caravan in a remote part of Scotland growing giant organic cabbages. From these small beginnings, the pioneering ecovillage of Findhorn has become one of the world’s most successful 1) experiments in sustainable living.
Some of the houses in the village have a rather strange 2) appearance. One home, for instance, was made out of a giant recycled whisky washback. Other innovative styles include a straw bale house and homes with turf roofs. Nevertheless, all the houses are built according to the 3) strict guidelines of the project’s building code to make sure that they are efficiently insulated to keep the need for heating to a minimum.
The village 4) generates its own electricity from four wind turbines and the site also has its own organic waste water treatment system. This is so 5) efficient that the treated water is pure enough to be used to water the villagers’ crops. Organic food is 6) planted in the village on numerous small plots and provides most of the community’s fresh food requirements.
Findhorn has 7) set an example of how to achieve a sustainable way of life that has a minimal impact on the environment and shows that, after all, it’s really not that difficult to do.

Please don’t go!
Maggie was in her room packing. Her best friend,Tanya, 1) was helping her choose clothes for her trip to the Canary Islands.
Maggie 2) had been studying Spanish since she was five. Now she was going to spend four weeks on the island of Tenerife working and practising the language.
“What am I going 3) to do without you here?” asked Tanya. “It’s going to be so boring.”

Farewell to a Grand Old Lady
The majestic cruise liner Queen Elizabeth 2 has had an extremely long and glorious history. Launched in 1967 in Clydebank, Scotland, she was designed to be one of the fastest and most 1) luxurious passenger liners afloat. In 40 years the QE2 has made some 800 Atlantic crossings and carried around 2.5 million passengers.
2) Originally conceived in the modern ‘space-age’ style of the 1960s, much of the décor was altered over the years to become increasingly old-fashioned. This was due in part to the 3) publicity in the 1990s surrounding the much earlier ship, the equally famous Titanic, which made passengers nostalgic for an older style.
Apart from world cruises, the QE2 has played some 4) unexpected roles. She took part in a rescue operation in 1971, when some 500 passengers were trapped on a burning ship, the Antilles. In one adventure the ship survived a huge freak wave and on another occasion she hit rocks, which resulted in the evacuation of passengers while repairs were carried out.
Now, at the end of her 5) legendary career, the QE2 is permanently docked in Dubai, as a first-class floating hotel. Future 6) generations will continue to be able to enjoy the splendour of this beautiful ship.
