Victory Day is celebrated in Russia on 9 May. It is a national public holiday dedicated to the victory of the Soviet Union in the Second World War on 9 May 1945.
On this day, a huge military parade takes place in Moscow on Red Square and in other major Russian cities. People lay wreaths and flowers on war memorials to honour those who died. Special parties and concerts are organised for veterans. At 7:00 pm, a Minute of Silence is broadcast on radio and TV to remember the fallen soldiers. The day ends with fireworks at night.
The main symbols of Victory Day are the St George's ribbon, a black-and-orange ribbon worn as a sign of respect and remembrance, and red carnations, which symbolise the blood red colour of the Soviet flag under which the veterans fought.
День Победы отмечается в России 9 мая. Это национальный государственный праздник, посвященный победе Советского Союза во Второй мировой войне 9 мая 1945 года.
В этот день в Москве на Красной площади, а также в других крупных российских городах проходит огромный военный парад. Люди возлагают венки и цветы к военным мемориалам в честь погибших. I live in Volgograd, and Victory Day is especially important for us because our city was the site of the Battle of Stalingrad. This year was particularly special as we celebrated the 80th anniversary of the Victory.
In the morning, I went to the military parade in the city centre. Thousands of people lined the streets, many holding photos of their relatives who fought in the war. After the parade, I visited Mamayev Kurgan, the main memorial complex. It was incredibly moving to see so many people laying flowers at the foot of the Motherland Calls statue. The atmosphere was solemn and full of pride.
In the evening, I watched the Minute of Silence broadcast and later enjoyed the stunning fireworks over the Volga River. I felt deeply connected to my city's history and so proud to be part of this unforgettable celebration.
Я живу в Волгограде, и День Победы особенно важен для нас, потому что наш город был местом Сталинградской битвы. Этот год был особенным, так как мы отмечали 80-летие Победы.
Утром я пошел на военный парад в центре города. Тысячи людей выстроились вдоль улиц, многие держали фотографии своих родственников, воевавших на войне. После парада я посетил Мамаев курган, главный мемориальный комплекс. Было невероятно трогательно видеть так много людей, возлагающих цветы у подножия монумента «Родина-мать зовет!». Атмосфера была торжественной и полной гордости.
Вечером я смотрел трансляцию Минуты молчания, а позже наслаждался потрясающим салютом над Волгой. Я чувствовал глубокую связь с историей моего города и гордость быть частью этого незабываемого празднования.
